Adapted Aquatics Assistant Certification

Purpose

The purpose of the Adapted Aquatics Assistant course is to prepare individuals to work under the supervision of a credentialed Adapted Aquatics Instructor, in aquatic programs that provide swim and water safety instruction to individuals with disabilities.

Prerequisites

The following prerequisites must be met prior to enrolling in the credentialing course.

·        Age 14+

·        Successful completion of the following swim test—Jump into deep water, tread water for 2 minutes (hands may be used), swim 10 yards using a stroke in a prone position, reverse direction and return 10 yards to the starting area using a stroke in the supine position. Participants may not stop and/or rest during this test.

Individuals without all prerequisites may audit the course. If they meet the prerequisites at a later date, they must retake the course in order to be credentialed. It is the responsibility of the Master Teacher/Adapted Aquatics Instructor to verify and document all prerequisites.

Course Length

12 hours MINIMUM

Course Instructor

Adapted Aquatics Instructors and Master Teachers of Adapted Aquatics may teach this course.

Course Fees

The AAPAR Aquatic Council fee for this course is $20. Since this course is primarily conducted during in-service education for a facility with an adapted aquatic program, it is assumed that the Adapted Aquatic Instructor will be a volunteer to teach this or conduct this course as part of their job responsibilities. If this credential is given to candidates who attend the Adapted Aquatics instructor or Adjunct course, but do not have the prerequisites for these credentials, OR do not pass the Adapted Aquatics written exam but pass all other areas and pass the Assistant exam, the fee is the same as the Adapted Aquatics Instructor course.
