  Adapted Aquatics Adjunct          

Purpose

The purpose of the Adapted Aquatics Adjunct credential is to prepare professionals who have professional certifications in related areas such as special education, physical education, adapted physical education, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and/or therapeutic recreation specialist, to work under the supervision/in conjunction with a credentialed Adapted Aquatics Instructor, in aquatic programs that provide swim and water safety instruction to individuals with disabilities. Those possessing this credential must work in conjunction with a credentialed  Adapted Aquatics Instructor or Certified Water Safety Instructor and does not suggest a professional solely conduct an Adapted Aquatics Program. As always, a certified lifeguard must be on deck with the sole responsibility of Lifeguarding during an adapted aquatics program. 

This is not a separate course. This is just a separate credential for professionals who have all the prerequisites for the Adapted Aquatics Instructor course except WSI, AND possess a professional license/certification/diploma in one of the disciplines listed above, AND have successfully completed all the requirements and final exam.

Prerequisites

·        Age 18+ ; Government issued ID proving age and identity

·        Proof of professional certification in a related area such as special education, physical education, adapted physical education, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and/or therapeutic recreation specialist

·        Successful completion of the following swim test—Jump into deep water, tread water for 2 minutes (hands may be used), swim 10 yards using a stroke in a prone position, reverse direction and return 10 yards to the starting area using a stroke in the supine position. Participants may not stop and/or rest during this test.

·        Current first aid certificate from a nationally recognized organization or equivalent (i.e., Current ARC Lifeguarding)

·        Current CPR certificate including infant, child, and adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation  PLUS AED, from a nationally recognized organization (Red Cross, American Heart Association, or equivalent)

·        Documented experience with individuals with disabilities (minimal 5 hours) for a weekend course

·        Strength sufficient enough to independently support a 125 lb. person in the water, and be part of a two person team to transfer same person in and out of a pool in an emergency.
